Finding Treasure in Roatan: Scuba Diving, Caribbean Life and Gold

About 35 miles off the coast of Honduras sits Roatan Island – boasting Caribbean vacation homes, lush tropical greenery, local developments and fishing villas. Roatan Island is around 32 miles long and is slender, elongated and curved like the blade of some ancient pirate’s cutlass. Surrounded by shimmering, sun drenched waters of turquoise – Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands. Hidden treasure of all kind waits patiently to be discovered on the island of Roatan.

Paradise Underwater

The first stop on our journey for treasure on Roatan Island will take us under the stunning crystal waters of the Caribbean to the 2nd largest coral reef in the world. Because the coral reef is so massive and breathtaking, Roatan diving is becoming a must for those interested in scuba diving and snorkeling – hence the dive resorts and villas nestled here and there on the island.

The sea life and coral come in every color of the rainbow. Enveloped by the blue-green waters, you will see fascinating clumps of coral which range in shape, color and size. You will be left speechless from the pure beauty while you’re diving or snorkeling in Roatan and you never know what you will spot in this magical place of strange and beautiful sights.

Pirate’s Gold

Fueled by the whispered rumors of ancient treasure, we will now be moving to various locations on Roatan Island – some of which are said in stories to contain the forgotten gold and treasures of pirate visitors from long ago. In the 1700′s, pirates had control of the island – and it is still said that some of their buried treasure and booty waits to be discovered to this day.

From chests full of gold doubloons to coffins filled with gold in underwater caves – there are numerous stories of treasure found on Roatan Island. Locals will tell stories of long forgotten places and adventurers who have found wealth through Roatan treasure! Will you be the next to discover riches and wealth on this untouched island left by a pirate of the old days?

Island Life

Our final discovery of treasure in Roatan is not gold, but some would say it’s a better kind of treasure. Although there are ‘tourist hotspots’ on Roatan, much of the island is untouched. However, some individuals and companies are seeing the importance of the development of Roatan. There are already many people who regularly visit their Caribbean vacation homes, villas in Roatan or quiet vacation condos.

One such is the Oceano Village development. Built away from the tourist areas, Oceano Village remains within reach of hospitals, tourist attractions and necessities. With a net-zero construction, the beach front homes are built of renewable resources and sit upon a beautiful lush, landscaped area of Roatan. Each vacation home is greeted outside by fine, powder white sand beaches and its own view of Paradise.

Caribbean vacation homes promise the quiet, uninterrupted lifestyle of a still-untouched island – combined with the colorful culture of the friendly locals and the promise of a new discovery each day on Roatan Island.

Romantic Roatán getaway, what to do?

My wife is planning a trip to Roatán (Honduras’ Bay Island) next month for us, I would love to surprise her with a special excursion while we’re there. Does anyone have any suggestions from experience, my wife is a massage therapist so I’m ruling out spas or massages..

Thanks!

I’m not sure of specific romantic excursions, since Roatan is automatically romantic, as many other islands in that area, but there is a plethora of things to do. Ocean kayaking is popular, as is scuba diving. If you’re not sure about scuba diving, you can always get inexpensive lessons all over the island.

There are also some Garifuna communities on the Bay Islands, so that’s a great way to delve into some of the culture.

There is some Horseback Riding available too, particularly at the West End.

Also, if you’re able to travel to the mainland beaches, I recommend La Ceiba and Tela.
La Ceiba is larger and offers some great nightlife. Tela is generally calmer, but just as interesting.
La Ceiba also has access to several other ecotourism wonders, from Pico Bonito to Cuero y Salado, Rio Cangrejal, etc.

One thing you’ll find about Honduras is that it’s generally calmer than the more known Central American countries, like Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama. Right now is a good time to go before it becomes a major hotspot.

If you stay on the Bay Islands alone, I’m sure that you’ll have a blast. If you also travel a little bit to La Ceiba’s area, you’ll have access to even more adventures.

Hope this helps, and have fun! :)

Planning a trip to either Honduras or Costa Rica. Which is better for wind surfing and fun bar/restaurants?

My wife and I are planning a one-week vacation in Central America away from the kids. We’re in our mid-30s and still pretty active with regard to water sports such as wind surfing, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, etc. (We don’t intend to do any scuba diving on the trip.)

The ideal place would have fun activities during the day and hopping bar/restaurants at night. Cost is not an issue. We’ve narrowed it down to either Costa Rica or Bay Islands of Honduras. Any advice from someone who has been to both?

Costa Rica is fantastic in many ways, however the bar hopping/restaurants at night this will greatly depend on where you stay if you will have access to this or not.

There are many parts of Costa Rica that are very enjoyable to visit. Some of my clients will say go to Guanacaste for a week for just a beach stay and others will visit maybe 3. However if you are going for a week I really wouldn’t do more than 2.

Between the two I would have to say check out Costa Rica. Honduras is definitely beautiful; I just love Costa Rica and hear such rave reviews from here on the countries beauty and friendly locals. It’s also quite active for what you want to do.

I would suggest working with a good agent who can not only help in the areas to stay in, but the hotels that are best felt would fit you. Because I can tell you some for sure will not fit your needs.

Much against popular belief agents don’t tack on commissions. Well I really can’t speak for all I suppose. I know our company does charge min. service fees as we look into many avenues to save you the most money we can for your dates. An agent can ask you various questions to determine which we feel is the best fit for you and what you are wanting. Not all agents can or are good at this. It is like any profession there are good, bad and lazy agents out there.

Please do be careful in planning this on your own if you chose to do so, because not all hotels online in photos are what they seem and you can only take reviews with a grain of salt. Now it is ok to look at reviews and if one has excessive ones then it is a good bet it is best to stay away from that one.

There are also two main airports you can fly into and depending on your departure city and which parts you end up staying in will determine which you will fly into. Costa Rica is a huge country more so than it looks!

If you like I would be happy to help you with this trip for you and your wife. Feel free to email me and I can help you from there.

Either way if I don’t hear from you though I do wish you the best of trip in Central America!

Chocolate- The Food Of The Gods

There are few foodstuffs with such a rich and intriguing history as cocoa and chocolate. Many people have a love affair with chocolate yet few of us know the unique origins of this popular treat. We tend to think of chocolate as a sweet candy created during modern times. But actually, chocolate dates back to the ancient peoples of Mesoamerica who drank chocolate as a bitter beverage.

The story of chocolate spans more than 3,000 years and began in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America where cacao trees, the seeds of which are made into chocolate, first grew. These tropical evergreen trees are native to Central and South America.

The botanical name of the tree that gives us chocolate is Theobroma Cacao, which literally means ‘food of the gods.’ The tree’s modern generic Latin name (Theobrama Cacao) actually derives from the Mayan word ‘cacao’ meaning ‘god food.’

Cacao trees produce large leathery fruits containing large seeds enveloped by a sweet-sour, cream-colored pulp. Fruits sometimes called pods can get to be the size of footballs and may contain as many as 50 seeds. Chocolate is made from the large seeds. It takes around 400 seeds to make 1 pound of chocolate.

The earliest known evidence for cacao use dates from around 1100 BC. Researchers identified residue of a chemical compound that comes exclusively from the cacao plant – the source of chocolate – in pottery vessels at an archaeological site in Puerto Escondido, Honduras.

The earliest cacao beverages consumed at Puerto Escondido were likely produced by fermenting the sweet pulp surrounding the seeds – and it was this beer-like drink that started the chocolate craze

The chocolate enjoyed by later Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztecs was made from ground cacao seeds with added seasonings, producing a spicy, frothy drink.

Both the Maya and Aztec people prized cacao, using the beans not only for culinary purposes but also for trade and as currency. Pre-Conquest chocolate was almost always a drink, which had many forms and flavourings. The Maya brewed a spicy, bitter sweet drink by roasting and pounding the seeds of the cacao tree (cocoa beans) with maize and capsicum (chilli) peppers and letting the mixture ferment. The Aztecs, like the Mayans, also enjoyed cacao as a beverage fermented from the raw beans. The Aztecs called this drink Xocolatl, the Spanish conquistadors found this almost impossible to pronounce and so corrupted it to the easier ‘chocolat’, the English further changed this to chocolate.

Chocolate was of major ceremonial importance to the Maya and the Aztecs. It was served at lavish banquets, buried with the dead, and used to anoint newborn babies. The Aztec’s also regarded chocolate as an aphrodisiac and their Emperor, Montezuma reputedly drank it fifty times a day from a golden goblet.

In fact, the Aztec’s prized Xocolatl so highly, that when Montezuma was defeated by Cortez in 1519 and the victorious ‘conquistadors’ searched his palace for the Aztec treasury expecting to find gold and silver, all they found were huge quantities of cocoa beans!

The Spanish brought cacao back to Europe in the 16th century. Eventually the drink’s popularity spread throughout the continent. Since then, new technologies and innovations have changed the texture and taste of chocolate, but it still remains one of the world’s favourite flavours.

Today, per capita consumption of chocolate in the United States and western Europe has doubled since 1945. The Swiss and the British eat the most chocolate. The Norwegians and Austrians drink the most chocolate.

Should any chocolate lovers need justification to indulge in their sweet addiction, the good news is that chocolate provides minerals such as potassium and calcium. Research also indicates that cacao consumption produces a marijuana-like effect, with a harmless euphoria. Chocoholics everywhere will attest to at least a mildly ecstatic psychological state from chocolate.

Remember to look for fair-trade designations when purchasing chocolate as cacao plantations are often criticised for poor working conditions and the destruction of rainforests.

The drought in Honduras what’s the current situation?

I have seen this article and I am wondering if it’s all true how bad will it get for the poor in Honduras?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/1485661.stm

In the U.S. they would import food and it would cost more would it be the same in Honduras?
As for the food question if the crops were to fail, I am assuming that one would have to buy food from a store probably at a higher cost. I doesn’t sound it will be a concern now though.

Honduras is about to feel the effects of Hurricane Dean…. that alone could end any drought.

I dont understand the other part of your question…
